Membership
The Balkan Institute for Regional Cooperation (BIRC) is actively engaged in several international networks and initiatives that promote democratic governance, transparency, media integrity, and regional cooperation. Through these memberships, BIRC contributes to cross-border dialogue, policy development, and collaborative action on key societal challenges.
UNCAC Coalition
BIRC is a member of the UNCAC Coalition, a global civil society network dedicated to supporting the implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC).
The coalition brings together more than 350 civil society organizations in over 100 countries working to strengthen transparency, accountability, and anti-corruption reforms worldwide.
Through this network, BIRC contributes to:
- monitoring anti-corruption policies
- strengthening public accountability mechanisms
- promoting civil society participation in anti-corruption processes
Anna Lindh Foundation Network
BIRC is part of the Anna Lindh Foundation Network, the largest civil society network in the Euro-Mediterranean region promoting intercultural dialogue and cooperation.
The network supports initiatives that foster:
- dialogue between cultures and societies
- youth engagement and civic participation
- regional cooperation between civil society organizations
Through this network, BIRC participates in regional initiatives that promote intercultural understanding and inclusive societies.
REFERENCE CIRCLE
BIRC is a member of the REFERENCE CIRCLE, a pan-European network of independent media organisations working to strengthen Europe’s democracies through resilient, high-impact journalism.
The network is a community of media leaders, supporting one another in building sustainable organisations fit for the future of our sector.
BIRC works together with 34 other members, pioneering new business models and organisational approaches that reimagine how journalism can thrive in Europe today. But innovation brings shared challenges – ones that are increasingly difficult to face alone.
That’s why we work together. Through Reference Circle, we transform collective experience into practical solutions to common structural and organisational hurdles, advancing a bold and sustainable future for journalism in Europe.

Journalism Trust Initiative (JTI)
BIRC is also part of the Journalism Trust Initiative (JTI), a global standard developed by Reporters Without Borders that promotes transparency, editorial independence, and ethical journalism.
The initiative aims to strengthen trust in media through measurable standards and self-assessment mechanisms.
